3 Things That Stop You From Receiving

How open are you to receiving? In his book, ‘Money isn’t the Problem, You Are’, Gary Douglas sums up the whole difficulty with receiving quite crisply that it isn’t money that’s creating a problem, but the lack of RECEIVING.

How is it that we are the ones responsible for not receiving? What puts the onus on us? Well, there are not one but several barriers within ourselves that stop us from receiving. In this blog, I will talk about the three most important barriers of them all.

Barrier One: If This then That

We limit ourselves to achieving the next step in our lives because of the barricades we create in our minds towards success. This form of thinking is very common in people pursuing professional careers. You are an experienced professional, having created a place for yourself in your company. You want to move forward; yet, there is something stopping you. You feel you won’t qualify for the next promotion or the next transfer or the next project because you don’t possess XXX qualification.

This thought pattern is not limited only to working professionals. It can happen with anybody at all, in any phase of our lives. And the amusing part is that we churn these thoughts repeatedly, all the time, without even realizing it. And that is what stops us from receiving.

Barrier Two: This is Yucky

Yucky, gross, awful, dreadful, appalling – the list of synonyms is endless. Ultimately, it all boils to one big negative reaction to an episode, an occurrence, or a presence that we may or may not have control over.

Perhaps you feel ill at the sight of dog poo on the street, or maybe animal prints on clothes and shoes, or even garbage. And the next thing you know is that you are experiencing a strong reaction to these objects, even though you have no control over them. But in the process you are shutting off your receiving as well. Not only are you shutting yourself from dogs, or clothes printed with animal stripes and spots, but also those people who own dogs or are wearing clothes of that style!

We have the power to receive from everything, even the most unpleasant of things. So, how can we change our negative reaction to a particular object to a positive one? The answer is simple – we must learn to lower our barriers. Remember, it is not our being that is getting affected by the unpleasantness but merely our body. If we continue to lower our barriers one step at a time whenever we encounter something appalling and dreadful, it will open us up to receiving. The crux of the matter is that there is always something to be received from the yuckiest, basest, grossest presence that we come across.

Barrier Three: I Feel Blah

The feeling of “blah” is nothing but a septic tank of negative feelings. It could contain sadness, depression, anger, worry, anxiety, or a mix of them all. Negative feelings are the quickest, surest way of cutting off our power of receiving. So, if we want to start receiving, it is imperative that we convert these negativities into positive thoughts of happiness, joy, peace, clarity, and abundance.

One of the fastest and most effective of doing so, and one that has worked successfully for a large number of people, is watching funny videos. Log into YoutTube! There is nothing like a good laugh to empty the emotional stressful septic tank buried within us. All it takes is just two to five minutes, and you can feel the sadness give way to joy and transport you to Happyland.
